Jim McLean

Owner of the Jim McLean Golf Schools in many locations in the US, Mexico and Spain. The best known of all Jim's Golf Schools is at the Trump Doral in Miami, Florida home of the PGA Tour for over 50 years.


As a player Jim is one of the few golfers to qualify for the US Junior, the US Amateur, the US Open and the US Senior Open and he participated in the 1972 Masters where he made the cut. Jim McLean won the Northwest Open and the Pacific Northwest Amateur. Jim qualified for the National Club Pro Championships ten times and was an All-American at the University of Houston. Jim won more than 45 Junior and Amateur Titles in the Pacific Northwest and was also named 1st alternate to the US Amateur World Cup Team in 72. 


McLean started as the Director of Golf at 4 top Golf Clubs at the Northeast: Sleepy Hollow Golf Club, Quaker Ridge G.C., Suningdale Golf Club and Tamarisk Country Club in Rancho Mirage California.


Jim is well known for the 8 Step Swing teaching system and his research on the golf swing and his work on The X Factor, which describes the body motions, body angles and positions. Jim is also the founder of the all time best selling video on The Golf Channel: The Eight Step video and the all time #1 golf DVD in the US. Jim's "Eight Step Swing" book was ranked by Sports Illustrated as one of the top golf instruction books and The Golf Swing of Ben Hogan video has many major instructional videos awards.


Jim McLean has worked with many PGA Tour, LPGA and Champions Tour players: Keegan Bradley, Hal Sutton, Benhard Langer, Brad Faxon, Tom Kite, Sergio Garcia, Lenny Mattiace, Lexi Thompson, Curtis Strange,

Cristie Kerr, Steve Elkington, Ben Crenshaw, Jerry Pate, Liselotte Neuman and Gary Player.

Jim McLean has worked with many of top Instructors in the world, this list includes: Harry Cooper, Jackie Burke, Carl Welty, Jimmy Ballard, Art Bell, Ben Doyle, Bill Collins, Gardner Dickinson, Claude Harmon, Butch Harmon, Craig Harmon, Dick Harmon, Al Mengert, Joe Nichols, Johnny Revolta, Paul Runyan, Bob Toski, Ken Venturi, Bob Watson, Gary Wiren, Harry Umbinetti, Homer Kelly, Manuel De La Torre and Jack Niclaus' intructor Jack Grout.


There are nine Lead Master Instructors who have worked under the Jim McLean System that have ranked to America's Top 100 Instructors by Golf Magazine and 20 on The Golf Digest top Instructors have also worked at one or more of the Jim McLean Golf Schools in the US.


SInce 1995 there has been 5 junior golfers Eric Compton, Cristie Kerr, James Vargas, Liz Janagelo and Tyler Leon that have reached the #1 junior ranking in the US working on their games and being mentored by Jim McLean. 


Jim McLean graduated 1973 at the University of Houston, B.A. Economics, at that time, McLean played a lot of Golf with greats like Bill Rogers (who latter won the British Open), John Mahaffey (who latter won the PGA Championship), Bruce Lietzke, Bobby Wadkins, Fuzzy Zoeller (who latter won The Masters and the US Open), Tom Jenkins and Bobby Walzel.


In 2010 Jim McLean was selected by Golf Digest within the pannel for what was called: The Big 4. The best known Golf Instructors in the world: Butch Harmon, David Leadbetter, Hank Haney and Jim McLean where invited to sit down together and talk about their experiences and knowledge.
